Senate Testimony

On Tuesday, December 12, 2000, I had the privilege to testify before the U.S. Senate Steel Caucus in Pittsburgh, PA. The purpose of this testimony was to dispute Department of Commerce Under Secretary, LaRussa’s belief that their administration has done everything possible to put an end to this crisis.
The amount of illegally subsidized steel entering the country has nearly reached the record levels of 1998.
Some of the suggestions made to end this crisis were to request the President to enforce Section 201 of the International Trade Law, begin consultations with every steel trading country to arrange quotas on all steel products, and attempt to have Congress realize the importance of enforcing existing trade laws and reject any attempt to eliminate current trade legislation.
"It’s time that our government stop treading water. They need to take the plunge and strive to reach an effective solution that will not only create relief for this industry, but most importantly ensure that there is a future for Weirton Steel and other steel producers throughout this great country," Glyptis stated.

Contract

Union and management officials began local negotiations December 13, 2000. Local negotiations consist of demands such as, but not limited to, air conditioners, heaters, tools, clothing allowance, office areas, restrooms, shower facilities, etc.
As of now, there is not a definite kick off date for main table negotiations. Your Union representatives will inform you of the process as we go along.

Happy Holidays

The Executive Committee, steward body, and I would like to wish everyone a safe and happy holiday season. As difficult as times are for the steel industry, and it seems that any news which we have received lately is always negative, it is important to be thankful for family and friends during this holiday season. Have a Happy New Year and best wishes to you and your loved ones.

New Arrival

Congratulations to Danny Sole on the birth of his granddaughter, Mikayla Lynn Sole, born November 24, 2000, at Magee’s Woman’s Hospital in Pittsburgh. Danny is employed in the Sheet Mill on No. 3 Galvanize Line, and has 30 years of service with Weirton Steel.

Toys for Tots

A fund-raiser by the Weirton Steel Carpenter Shop employees in Operation Services raised $1,040 for the Tri-State Marine Corps Clubs Toys for Tots Program.
Bernadette Kester presented a check to Henry DeMasis, Commander of the Tri-State Marine Corps Club. Kester stated that she would like to thank everyone in the Carpenter Shop for their effort. This will help many children in need this holiday season.

West Virginia Delegate

Randy Swartzmiller, newly elected 1st District Delegate, has been appointed to the West Virginia Steel Advisory Commission by Bob Kiss, Speaker of the House.
Randy is an I.S.U. member and will bring 18 years of steel and environmental experience to the Commission.
We congratulate Randy and wish him all the best in his efforts to represent his constituents in the 1st District.
