Conley Appointed

Edward Conley, a 20-year veteran of union leadership was recently appointed by the Union Executive Committee as coordinator of the Employee Involvement Program at Weirton Steel.
Conley replaced Anthony Julian who retired last year.
"I have very mixed feelings. First of all I am very excited about this opportunity in my life and my career. I think the program already has some great people involved and I look forward to working with them to get quality and employee involvement as a main priority in this company," Conley explained.
"But I will also miss performing the union work I grew up with. I’ve been a steward for twenty years and a committeeman for the last eighteen years and it’s hard to leave all that behind," Conley noted.
Ed’s father, Bob Conley served as a union representative from the Strip Steel from 1957 until 1983.
According to I.S.U. President Mark Glyptis, the Conley appointment will mean renewed emphasis on employee involvement.
"We had several months of discussions with the company on filling this job because once Anthony Julian left, we felt we needed a union presence," Glyptis noted.
"It’s the workers of this mill who will make us succeed and I think Ed will do an excellent job working with the employee involvement facilities in getting the job done," Glyptis added.
Conley will work out of the Union Hall and the M.A.B.

Morelli Elected

The appointment of Strip Steel Chairman Ed Conley to the coordinator of Employee-Involvement program also meant his resignation from his union duties.
The Strip Steel stewards recently met and elected Emil Morelli to serve as divisional chairman for the remainder of the three-year term.
Morelli currently serves as steward for the Strip Steel Pipefitters, Maintenance Mechanics, Riggers and Welders.
He is a veteran union official who has previously served on the Executive Committee.

Election

Conley’s stewardship has now been vacated and the Union will hold an election to fill the position for the remainder of the three-year term.
The stewardship covers Strip Steel Division, Department No. 9 – Anneal, Nos. 7 & 8 Skin Mill, Roll Shop and Inspection, Detinning Plant, Environmental Technicians and Utilitymen.
Signups will be held at the I.S.U. Union Hall starting Monday, January 24, 2000 through Thursday, January 27, 2000 from 7am to 5 pm and on Friday, January 28,2000 from 7am to 3pm.
The election will be held from Saturday, January 29, 2000 through Monday, February 7, 2000. The ballots will be mailed to the United States Post Office Box. The ballots will be counted on Tuesday, February 8, 2000 by the Certified Public Accountants firm of Wallace, Padden and Company, of Steubenville.
The results will be posted at the Union Hall February 8, 2000.

Super Bowl Steelworkers

When ABC Sports needed some real American faces to put in their Super Bowl Sunday pre-game show, they came to Weirton.
A crew was by last week filming I.S.U. members exiting No. 1 Gate as part of a tribute to America.
The promo is expected to air prior to the January 30 Super Bowl.
The film crew then moved to the B.O.P. to videotape the pouring of molten steel as part of their backdrop for American workers.
And they finally stopped at D.J.’s restaurant to film steelworkers watching…what else but the Super Bowl on ABC television.

401(K) Update
By John Balzano

In order to enroll in the company’s Tax Deferred 401(K) Savings Plan, an employee must call 1-800-835-5093. Enrollment and deductions become effective on a quarterly basis (January 1, April 1, July 1 and October 1).
After enrollment, an employee may choose from the following contribution options:

  • Regular Pay – can contribute from 1% to 15% in ½% increments
  • Profit sharing and lump sum vacation payments – can contribute from 1% to 50% in movements of 1%
  • Contractual bonuses – can contribute from 1% to 100%

It’s very important to note that because enrollment and contribution changes are done on a quarterly basis, an employee not already in the plan will not be able to enroll in time to have his profit sharing payment contributed. Any changes in contribution percentages must be made by the 10th day of the last month of the quarter.
The Union representatives on the 401(K) committee are trying to change the rules to allow any profit sharing this year to be placed in the savings plan. They are still working on that request at this time.

Laid-off Numbers

Our hourly and salary non-exempt union brothers and sisters are continuing to return to work as the company slowly reduces the laid-off numbers.
Union President Mark Glyptis said the company is anticipating a profit for 1999 and that will force the company to contractually return all hourly laid-off members back to work.
"We are below the hourly job security number so all hourly members will come back. We are slightly above the job security numbers for salary non-exempt but we are working on several ideas to hopefully bring back all laid-off clerical as soon as possible." Glyptis explained.

Ads for Scabs

You may have noticed help wanted advertisements in the local newspapers recently for Industrial Production Workers.
The ad cites excellent hourly wages and notes a steel manufacturer in Mansfield, Ohio is accepting resumes for temporary replacement workers.
The ad goes on to state a labor dispute is in progress and limited picketing exists.
Beware! This is an ad looking for Scabs!!
AK Steel in Mansfield, Ohio has currently locked out members of the United Steelworkers Union in a four-month dispute.
And temporary work is correct. The USWA will ultimately prove successful and their union members will return to their jobs.
