We Endorse

The Union’s Executive Committee has announced it’s final endorsements for the West Virginia May Primary.
The Committee made the endorsements following extensive research, interviews, and discussions.
For First District State Senate, we endorse Tal Hutchins. Hutchins currently serves as a delegate from Ohio County and also works for the Ohio Education Association in Cambridge, Ohio.
In the Hancock County Delegate race, the Executive Committee has endorsed incumbent Tamara Pettit and Randy Swartzmiller.
There are several candidates vying for the two positions, but we feel Pettit and Swartzmiller are the best candidates for this job.
In Brooke County, the Executive Committee has endorsed incumbents Roy Givens and Tim Ennis.
Both Givens and Ennis have been strong supporters of the I.S.U. and our issues, and we believe they should retain their House of Delegates positions.
And in the First Circuit Court judicial race the Executive Committee has endorsed Martin Gaughan for re-election.
We encourage all West Virginia voters to participate in the May primary election.
We hope you give serious consideration to those candidates the Executive Committee has endorsed, but most important of all we urge you to vote on Election Day.

New Gate
By Delbert Littleton

After months of discussions, reviews, and more discussions, the Company has agreed to install a revolving pedestrian gate near the Sheet Mill West Street entrance for safety reasons.
The Union has been trying to get a pedestrian gate installed ever since the Company started closing and locking the main gate on the back lot.

Seattle East

Our Union brothers and sisters joined thousands of other union activists in Washington, D.C. recently to protest a Clinton administration plan to allow China permanent membership in the World Trade Organization.
The crowd estimated at 15,000 strong, stood in front of the U.S. Capitol and heard John Sweeney, President of the AFL-CIO; Jimmy Hoffa, President of the Teamsters; Steve Yovich, President of the United Auto Workers; and George Becker, President of the United Steelworkers of America, call for "no blank checks for China".
The daylong event was organized by the AFL-CIO and remained very peaceful and orderly.
After the rally, the I.S.U. delegation visited several congressional offices in order to lobby for "Stand Up For Steel" issues.

New Optometrist
By John Balzano

Dr. John Meyers has been appointed to the staff of the Weirton Steel Optical Center.
The appointment of a second optometrist came after the Union lobbied for additional help at the Optical Center because of a backlog of patient appointments.
Dr. Suzanne Evano remains on staff at the Optical Center.

Union Election

The campaigning for Union President and Union stewards is now well underway.
We urge all union members to listen to the candidates and then decide who will do the best job for you.
But most of all, we urge you to participate in the election process by voting with your mail-in ballot.
It may take a few minutes, but it’s important for all of us to participate.
