Hiring

Weirton Steel has started the permanent hiring process and is now awaiting proposed applications from an independent consulting firm, Aon.
Aon is an employment agency out of Findley, Ohio.
According to Executive Vice-President David Robertson, management is currently trying to determine where permanent vacancies now exist.
He said the next step will be to comply with contractual language in order to put the jobs up for bid.
No firm decision yet on how many employees will eventually will be hired. However this may be the start of hiring of much needed maintenance employees as well as operation employees.

Shareholders Meeting

The annual Weirton Steel Shareholders meeting is set for May 24, 2000 at 6pm at the Serbian-American Culture Center in Weirton.
All shareholders are urged to attend this once a year meeting with the company board of directors.
According to Union President Mark Glyptis, the meeting is an excellent chance to discuss issues face to face with the men who ultimately make the critical decisions.
"Sooner or later, just about everyone in the mill has a question or comment or suggestion and you should come to the annual shareholders meeting to express your views," Glyptis said.
"We are still an employee-owned company and this provides us a chance to meet together as owners of a multi-million dollar corporation. It’s really important for us to attend," Glyptis added.
Shareholders will be asked to register at the door.

Food Fund

The I.S.U. Food Fund is alive and well and still collecting donations.

Union Hall Office Manager Jim Andreozzi said the food fund, originally created at the peak of last year’s massive lay-offs, will remain active.
"We currently have eight salary non-exempt union members on lay-off and we would like to do something for them," Andreozzi explained.
Anyone who would like to sign up for the payroll deduction for the food fund or anyone who wants to discontinue their payroll deduction should contact Andreozzi at the Union Hall.

I’ll Work

A Cornell University study has determined employees work overtime in order to maintain a basic-living standard.
The study also found the "misery index" rose with the total number of hours worked every week.
Employees forced to work overtime suffered depression, stress, and higher levels of job-escape drinking and higher absenteeism due to illness.
Union workers in the auto industry cited overtime has gotten so extreme people’s personal lives are invaded by it.
The Cornell study found employers find it cheaper to work overtime at time and a half, than hire new employees.

Wellness Center

Coming up May 16 & 17 the Wellness Center will be conducting aerobic registration and screening from 5:30am until noon at the Penco Road Center.
And scheduled for May 14th is a Race for the Cure. This is a 5K-run/walk and 1 mile fun walk to benefit breast cancer research and treatment.
You can call the Wellness Center for more information.
The annual colorectal cancer screening is set for June. Watch for the signs with more information.
