| The I.S.U. Will Not Go Away Union
President, Mark Glyptis, recently announced that he will testify on behalf of the domestic
steel industry at the Congressional Steel Caucus Member Briefing, which will be held on
Thursday, September 14, 2000, in Room B-308 of the Rayburn Building, Washington, D.C. The Competitive Edge The Sheet Mill is in the process of installing a Conditioning Mill on No. 5 Galvanize Line and a Conditioning Mill and Tension Leveler on No. 3 Galvanize Line. I.S.U. Chairman Mark Roach said "the improvements will eliminate the need for further processing and open the door for business in tension leveled products." The Conditioning Mill on No. 5 Line should be completed by the end of November. According to Roach, this is good news for the Sheet Mill because the improvements will enhance quality and ensure Weirtons competitiveness for the future in the galvanized market. Were In Good Hands I.S.U. Steward Larry Garafalo announced that Weirton Steels Fire Department once again proved that it is one of the best in the business. The 25th Annual West Virginia EMS and Fire competition was held in Weirton on August 18, 19, and 20. According to Garafalo, the Weirton Steel Crew finished first in combat challenge and super star competition. They also claimed second in CPR/Driving and finished third in firefighting. The high scores reflect the quality and superior ability of our Fire Department. Garafalo stated "special accolades were also given to Paul Sicurella and his wife Lisa for coordinating this event." The I.S.U. was a Gold Sponsor for the competition. Members of the team are: William Miller, Eric Carper, Scott Richards, Mark DeHammer, Fran DiBenedetto, Brady Mermon, Bert Jennings, Ed Kurpowicz, Danielle Thomas, and Paul Sicurella. |
Stay Well By John Balzano I.S.U. Benefits Coordinator John Balzano announced the following
dates for the Wellness Program: A Cholesterol Class will be held on September 13 from 5:30
p.m. to 8:30 p.m, and on September 14, Weirton Steel will present "Talk To A
Dietician" from 1:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. For more details and registration, please call
the Wellness Coordinator, Debi Yakunich at 797-5105. Reminder I.S.U. President, Mark Glyptis stated that numerous contract demands and ideas continue to come in to the Union Hall. If you have not submitted your demands or ideas, please contact your steward or mail your suggestions to the I.S.U. Hall, 2971 West Street, Weirton, WV 26062. Around the Mill William "Bud" Underwood, Jr. just received his Masters Degree in Business
Administration at Point Park College in Pittsburgh. His accumulative grade point average
was 3.54. Bud is the son of 27 year employee Bill Underwood. Bill works in the Strip Steel
Hot Mill. Done It Again Some I.S.U. members will notice an approximate 10% reduction in their paychecks next pay because of managements decision to cancel them on Labor Day. Wonder how many salary-exempt employees will be short on payday? Will the sacrifices ever be equal? Blood Bank The next I.S.U. Blood Bank is scheduled for Thursday, September 14 at the Millsop
Community Center. Three names from those participating will be drawn in a raffle for a
$200 gift certificate redeemable at a local retailer of the winners choice.
