Mark Glyptis to Testify in Washington, D.C. on Thursday, November 18, 1999

Weirton, WV--The President of the Independent Steelworkers Union has been invited to testify Thursday in Washington, DC on Japanese steelmakers dumping tin plate products into the United States.

Mark Glyptis, head of the 3,800 member union will join officials from the United Steelworkers of America and Weirton Steel Corporation in providing detailed testimony to the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC).

The I.S.U. joined last month with the U.S.W.A. and Weirton Steel in July a trade case against the Japanese steelmakers.

"I would hope someone would finally realize we are not going to give up this fight. The I.S.U. is prepared to work hard in order to protect our steel interest," Glyptis said.

He also noted the Japanese invasion of American markets through the illegal dumping practice is highly close to home.

"Just visit a couple of the businesses in the Half Moon Industrial Park and you will see cheap Japanese dumped tin plate," Glyptis noted.

"I am honored to represent the men and women of Weirton Steel in Thursday's hearing and hopefully we will achieve a victory before the I.T.C.," Glyptis remarked.

"The Tin Mill has always been a major part of our company, but this Japanese dumping could eventually hurt our company. That is why we must continue the fight," Glyptis added.

Glyptis said more than half of imported tin plate into the United States this year came from Japan.
