ISU To Seattle

Weirton, WV 26062-Two leaders in the Independent Steelworkers Union fight to stop illegally dumped foreign steel will demonstrate at the World Trade Organization (WTO) Ministerial meeting in Seattle, Washington, next week.

I.S.U. President Mark Glyptis and the Union's "Stand Up For Steel" Campaign Chairman Mark Roach will join thousands of steelworkers and federal legislators to protest the Clinton Administration's special deal for China and lack of action in stopping illegal steel imports.

According to Glyptis, the I.S.U. Executive Committee decided upon sending the two men because of the important role the I.S.U. has played in the "Stand Up For Steel" campaign.

"This Union has been at the forefront of the illegal dumping fight, and we felt we should maintain our presence at this extremely important meeting," Glyptis said.

Glyptis said he and Roach will try to attend the WTO meeting as well as participate in planned demonstrations.

"Mark and I will join thousands of members of the United Steelworkers Union and the AFL-CIO on November 30th, for a march and rally in downtown Seattle. Then on December 1, 1999, we plan on joining forces with the Steelworkers, the Longshoremen, and the Teamsters at a 'Stop Steel Dumping at the Docks' demonstration at Seattle's Pier 62-63," Glyptis explained.

"We did not want to spend this much time away from our families but this meeting is so important we felt it was imperative to be in Seattle" Glyptis stated.

Roach said several area legislators have indicated they will also be at the trade talks in Seattle.

"I think you can safely say we will continue the "Stand Up For Steel" campaign and make our presence known," Roach added.
