ISU President Invited to Attend Cleveland’s Town Hall Meeting

Weirton, West Virginia—A town hall meeting attended by U.S. Representative Dennis Kucinich, (D), Ohio, U.S. Representative Stephanie Tubbs Jones, (D), Ohio, as well as other local, state, federal, and union representatives, met in the offices of WEWS Television station, Thursday, December 28, 2000, in Cleveland, Ohio, to discuss solutions and show support in LTV Steel Corporation’s struggle for survival.

Mark Glyptis, Independent Steelworkers Union President, stated that this steel import crisis is not under control as the government would continually have everyone believe. The effect of a possible shutdown of LTV would be devastating for the City of Cleveland. The imports of illegally subsidized steel could be stopped immediately with the stroke of a pen by the President supporting Section 201 of the International Trade Law. However, we’ve come to expect very little, if nothing, from the present administration. It’s become very evident that all unions, Teamsters, USW, Longshoreman, UAW, and the ISU are being or will be affected due to our government’s refusal to recognize present trade laws. We should unite and support each others struggles to find solutions that will secure our industry’s longevity.

Some of these solutions for the steel industry would be to have all steel trading countries obtain a five year comprehensive quota agreement with every major steel exporter who is not a WTO member, administration’s enforcement of Section 201 of the International Trade Law, and that congress realize the importance of enforcing existing trade laws and reject all attempts to eliminate current trade legislation.

Mark Roach, ISU official, also attending the town hall meeting, stated, "It’s time that we unite and take our issues back to Washington as we did with our Stand Up For Steel Campaign in 1999. The only true solution is showing solidarity to our government, and that we will not allow our manufacturing jobs to be eliminated in order to secure foreign employment. We will take all necessary measures to achieve this goal."

Mark Glyptis, President, I.S.U., stated "It’s time our government starts supporting American workers as well as they have supported foreign industry."
