Massive Letter Writing Campaign
Weirton, WV- The Independent Steelworkers Union is calling upon the Ohio Valley to
participate in a massive letter writing campaign in an effort to obtain approval of steel
legislation in the United States Senate.
According to I.S.U. Communications Director David Gossett, the names and addresses of
all 100 United States Senators will be available at the Union Hall in Weirton.
"When we were in Washington, DC earlier this week, we heard over and over about
the tremendous impact the people of the Ohio Valley had on the votes in the House of
Representatives through rallies, telephone calls, and letters," Gossett said.
"We really need to get as many letters sent to all of the Senators as we can. We
have learned it really makes a difference. When this legislation was first introduced in
the House, the experts all predicted the bill had no chance, but we eventually won,"
Gossett declared.
He said it now appears the Senate will consider the Steel Recovery Act sometime next
month.
"This is all about old-fashioned grassroots politics. We were successful in the
House of Representatives due to our local Congressional Delegation and because of the
lobbying efforts of the Ohio Valley residents," Gossett explained.
The names and addresses of the Members of the Senate will be available at the Union
Hall during regular business hours Monday through Friday.
Anyone with a fax machine can have the list faxed to them.
"The most important thing now is to send letters to the Senators. We need as many
people to get involved for a big lobbying campaign. We have won a victory in the House of
Representatives, but we face a tough fight in the Senate," Gossett concluded.
