Weirton Steel’s Response To July Import Increase;  Imports Through July Only Slightly Behind 1998 Record Pace

WEIRTON, WV. -- Weirton Steel Corp. Chief Executive Officer Richard Riederer has repeated his call earlier this week for new federal trade legislation following today’s government report of another monthly increase in steel imports.

The report revealed the 3.2 million tons that arrived in the U.S. during July is 6 percent higher than those in June. The July numbers – the second highest monthly total this year – mark the third increase in five months.

Through July of this year, 20 million tons of imports have entered American markets. The amount is only 2 million tons behind foreign shipments during the first seven months of 1998, the record year for steel imports.

"This year, imports are only slightly off last year’s record pace and that is totally unacceptable. Import levels once again point to the need for new and effective laws that address the current problem and prevent future ones," commented Riederer.

The CEO said legislation, such as H.R. 1505 proposed by U.S. Rep. Phil English, R-Pa., is designed to address trade issues affecting all domestic industries. Riederer noted the bill would create laws that are easier to apply and to enforce.

"We’re increasing the pressure on the Clinton administration and working closer with our legislators to resolve trade problems. Other nations should not be permitted to dump their illegally priced products in the U.S. While we’re received some success by filing trade cases, this matter should be addressed at our borders before they evolve into time-consuming, costly legal battles," Riederer explained.
